Former Victoria University President Paul Gooch has been a professor of philosophy since 1967, with a cross-appointment to the Centre for the Study of Religion. He currently also teaches a Vic One Hundred course at Victoria College, which examines the ethics of characters and focuses on common vices and neglected virtues. His research interests are in ethics and moral psychology in ancient philosophy, and the problem of evil and theodicy and ethics in the philosophy of religion. Prior to his role of president of Victoria University in 2001, President Gooch held the position of vice-provost of the University of Toronto, chair of the Division of Humanities at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, director of the Graduate Centre for Religious Studies, and the positions of associate dean, vice-dean and acting dean of the School of Graduate Studies. In addition to his teaching, President Gooch is the author of several publications and books in his field, and has attended and spoken at numerous national and international conferences and universities in North America, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Europe.
