2024 in Review: Victoria University’s Defining Moments

2024 was a year to remember for Victoria University, marked by a series of unforgettable milestones and moments that highlighted the strength and resilience of our community. Let’s revisit some of the year’s most impactful stories.

January 
Iconic Victoria College Chapel to be Refurbished

Brian Johnston, Vic 8T1, believes there is a direct relationship between student success and inspiring physical spaces on campus. Johnston and his wife Colleen pledged $500,000 to refurbish the historic chapel in the Old Vic building. This well-loved space, home to classes, concerts, and ceremonies since 1892, will be transformed into a multi-purpose teaching area while retaining its architectural charm and highlighting its stunning stained-glass windows. 

February 
Victoria University Remembers Norman Jewison 

Victoria University mourned the loss of Norman Jewison, a distinguished alumnus and one of Canada's most acclaimed filmmakers, Jewison's films such as Fiddler on the Roof and Moonstruck earned numerous accolades, while his contributions to civil rights and human dignity were central to his work. Jewison, who served as Chancellor of Victoria University from 2004–2010, was also a generous benefactor. 

March
Work Begins on Goldring Student Centre

Construction officially began in Mach on the redevelopment of the Goldring Student Centre, marking the start of a major project within Victoria University’s 10-year Capital Plan. The renovation, which was completed in time for the fall semester, created a student-focused hub on the second floor's east wing, consolidating key student services—the Office of the Registrar and Academic Advising, the Dean’s Office and the Victoria College Writing Centre. The revamped space features areas for studying, socializing and relaxation.

'Today is the Day for Hugs': Lisa Sherlock Celebration of Life

A celebration of life was held in Victoria College Chapel to honour the memory of Lisa Sherlock, Chief Librarian of Victoria University, who passed away on May 20, 2024. Friends, family, and colleagues gathered to remember her exceptional kindness, wisdom and dedication. Sherlock’s impact on the university community was immense, especially her work enhancing the Victoria University Library's world-renowned collections. Her legacy as a mentor, scholar and friend lives on in the hearts of those she touched, with many recalling her gift for making others feel valued and loved.

Vic U Launches Centre for Creativity

Victoria University launched a new Centre for Creativity, aiming to foster collaboration across disciplines to address societal challenges through creative solutions. The centre will bring together students, faculty, and artists from the arts, sciences, and technology, creating spaces for cross-disciplinary innovation. Directed by Professor Adam Sol, it seeks to stimulate creative thinking, explore how it can be nurtured, and encourage problem-solving for complex global issues. The centre is poised to become a hub for the next generation of creators and cultural entrepreneurs, enhancing Vic U's legacy of interdisciplinary excellence.

New Principal of Victoria College Announced

Victoria University announced Professor Alex Eric Hernandez as the new Principal of Victoria College beginning on July 1, 2024. Hernandez, an esteemed academic in the humanities and associate professor in the Department of English at the University of Toronto, was recognized for his teaching excellence and innovative, interdisciplinary approach. His leadership experience included shaping curriculum, fostering scholarly communities and advancing student programming. Hernandez succeeded Professor Angela Esterhammer, who served as principal for 12 years.

In Memoriam: Donald Sutherland Vic 5T8 


The Victoria University community mourned the passing of actor Donald Sutherland at the age of 88. A 1958 graduate of Victoria College with a dual degree in engineering and drama, Sutherland's career spanned seven decades and more than 190 acting credits, including iconic roles in M*A*S*H, The Hunger Games and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. A passionate advocate for social issues, Sutherland received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in 1998. His remarkable achievements earned him numerous awards, including an Honorary Oscar and two Golden Globes.

August 
Record Enrolment at Emmanuel College for 2024–25

Emmanuel College saw a record surge in enrolment for the 2024–25 academic year, with a one-third increase in basic degree registrations. The college now has 239 students across all programs, including a significant rise in the Master of Divinity and Master of Theological Studies programs. Key factors driving this growth include new hybrid learning options, expanded program foci (Buddhist, Christian, Muslim and Interfaith), generous scholarships and improved outreach efforts. These developments reflect Emmanuel’s commitment to fostering diverse, future spiritual leaders. 

September 
Indigenous Healing Garden to Be Built at Emmanuel College

Emmanuel College will soon be home to an Indigenous Healing Garden, a space for reflection, truth and reconciliation, as well as a place to learn about Indigenous traditions and land stewardship. Set to open in Spring 2025, the garden will feature medicinal plants and wildflowers and will be fully accessible. It’s part of Victoria University’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation process and sustainability initiatives. The garden will serve as both a visual symbol of Indigenous presence and a space for academic learning, furthering efforts to respect Indigenous spirituality and cultures. 

November 
Two Vic Students Win Rhodes Scholarships–A Historic First

Victoria University celebrated a historic achievement as students Noah Rudder and Amy Mann were named 2025 Rhodes Scholars, becoming the first pair of Vic students to win the prestigious award in the same year. Rudder, a Peace, Conflict and Justice major with a passion for social justice and the arts, and Mann, a mathematics and statistics student focused on global health, will both pursue graduate studies at Oxford University. Their accomplishments highlight Vic’s strong community and commitment to interdisciplinary approaches in tackling global challenges.
