Specialist in Literature and Critical Theory
The Literature and Critical Theory program offers two Specialist streams: Comparative Literature and Cultural Theory. To acquire a Specialist in either stream, you'll need to complete a series of general requirements, as well as certain stream-specific requirements.
General Requirements
You'll need to complete a total of 12.5 credits (no more than 1.0 credit at the 100 level), including:
- at least 4.0 credits at the 300+ level, and
- 1.0 credit at the 400 level

Quantitative Reasoning Competency
To fulfill the Quantitative Reasoning competency required in the program, you will also need to complete 0.5 credit in:
- Breadth Requirement Category 5: The Physical and Mathematical Universes, or
- another half course approved by the program coordinator.

Comparative Literature stream-specific requirements
Please note: these requirements only apply to students in the Comparative Literature stream.
6.0 credits in languages or literatures drawn from other departments, of which:
- at least 4.0 credits must involve reading texts in a language other than English,
- at least 2.0 credits must be at the 300+ level.
Your courses must be pre-approved by the program coordinator to ensure they will be counted towards this program of study.
Cultural Theory Stream-Specific Requirements
Please note: these requirements only apply to students in the Cultural Theory stream.
2.0 credits in courses where the primary language of study is not English, including at least 1.0 credit at the 300+ level.
4.0 credits in ONE of the following disciplines:

Major in the Comparative Literature Stream
To acquire a Literature and Critical Theory Major in the Comparative Literature Stream, you'll need to complete a series of general requirements, as well as certain stream-specific requirements.

You'll need to complete a total of 7.0 credits (no more than 1.0 credit at the 100 level), including:
- at least 2.0 credits at the 300+ level, and
- including a 0.5 credit at the 400 level
