Victoria College's Combined Degree Program offers students the opportunity to integrate a Master of Teaching (MT) with an Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc) or Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) in six years.

Entry Requirements

Students interested in the pursuing the Combined Degree Program must be enrolled in:

and any one of the following major programs

This program requires that students applying to the MT have two teaching subjects regardless of the concentration they are applying to (i.e. Intermediate/Senior, Junior/Intermediate or Primary/Junior). This means that they are required to have six full-year university courses (6.0 FCE) in the first teaching subject, and a minimum of three full-year courses in the second teaching subject (3.0 FCE). Note: French as a Second Language, International Languages and Science subjects require more than 3 full-year university courses.

Other Requirements

In addition to the required Minor in Education and Society and any one of the above for major programs, students must also enrol in an additional minor program which will allow them to complete both the requirements for their undergraduate degree, and the requirements for their second teaching subjects.

Program Requirements

To be considered for conditional admission to the Master of Teaching and the Combined Degree Program, students must meet the following admission requirements:

  1. Have completed—or be on the course to complete—the Education and Society Minor Program at Victoria College.
  2. Be registered in the 3rd year of the H.B.Sc. or H.B.A. Degree Program, in one of the above listed major programs.
  3. Have an average grade equivalent of at least B+ or better, normally demonstrated by an average grade in the 2nd year.
  4. Provide at least two letters of reference.
  5. Be on course to complete the prerequisites for two teaching subjects irrespective of whether they ultimately intended registering in the Intermediate/Senior, Junior/Intermediate or Primary/Junior concentration (Note: candidates must have completed at least half of the teaching subjects prerequisite courses [i.e. 3.0 FCE in 1st teaching subject, and 1.5 FCE in 2nd teaching subject] by the time they are conditionally admitted to the MT program, that is, by the 2nd term of 3rd year in the undergraduate program).
  6. Meet other qualifications as specified by the MT program:

Teaching Subject Requirements

All students must meet the requirements for two teaching subjects. In order to meet the admissions requirements for their two teaching subjects, applicants must be on course to completing the required number of prerequisite courses in each of their subject areas as part of their undergraduate studies. Specifically, applicants must have six full university courses (or equivalent) in their first teaching subject, and three full university courses (or equivalent) in their second teaching subject. French as a Second Language, International Languages and Science subjects require more than 3 FCE.

Conditions of Offer

If at the end of 4th year the student has not met the requirement of completing 6.0 FCEs in the first teaching subject and 3.0 FCEs in the second teaching subject, the offer of conditional admission to the Combined Degree Program will be rescinded. Students in this position could apply separately to the Master of Teaching outside of the Combined Degree Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I apply?

Students in their third year of study may apply in the Fall term for the following academic year.

Do I need to be in the Education and Society Minor?

Yes. You must already be enrolled in the Education & Society Minor to apply.

Is there any way to be in the Combined Program if I'm unable to take the Education & Society Minor?

Unfortunately, no. If you are not already enrolled in the Minor by your third year, you will not have sufficient time to complete the Minor and meet the requirements for the Combined Program.

However, you may still be eligible for the Masters of Education Program at OISE. Please visit their website for further details: www.oise.utoronto.ca

What are "teaching subjects"?

Teaching subjects (i.e. English, Math etc) are subjects where a teacher candidate must meet certain qualifications in order to teach them.

How many teaching subjects do I need?

Regardless of what level you intend to teach, you will need to have two teaching subjects. One of these two subjects must be in English, History, Mathematics, or Social Sciences.

For a complete list of teaching subjects, please visit OISE's website: www.oise.utoronto.ca

I want to teach Primary/Junior (K-6), do I still need to have teaching subjects?

Yes, you still need to have two teaching subjects.

How many credits in each teaching subject do I need?

You need 6.0 Full Course Equivalents (FCE) in your primary teaching subject, and 3.0 FCE in your second teaching subject.

However, if your second teaching subject is a Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or General Science) or Second Language (e.g. French), then you must have 6.0 FCE in that subject as well.

What if I am unable to meet the teaching subject FCE requirements by the time I graduate?

Should you be unable to meet the FCE requirements, your conditional admission to the Combined Program will be rescinded.

However, you may still be eligible for the Masters of Education Program at OISE. Please visit their website for further details: www.oise.utoronto.ca
